*The following is the introduction for teachers who attended my course on process writing in the summer of 2019. You will find the PPT from the course linked below.
Dear Fellow Teachers,
Thank you for spending your precious time with me to expand your teaching practice! I will do everything I can to make sure your time is well spent.
I hope my workshop will give you a few good ideas to apply in your classrooms and will spark some conversations between you and your colleagues on how to help students improve their English writing. I also aim for us to have some fun because I believe a light and positive class atmosphere is crucial to language learning – and to staying awake!
During this workshop, we will explore a series of writing lessons. Because our time is limited, we will move quickly through some parts, but I have provided materials for each lesson in this course packet, for your reference.
In the first half, we will focus on the fundamentals. We will start by defining process writing and discussing why and how it can be useful for English learners. Then we will walk through a lesson on paragraphs that will help students get started with their writing process.
In the second half, we will talk about how to provide students with relevant feedback on their writing, using a variety of strategies. In the last part of the workshop, I’ll introduce a little game that will give students extra practice at identifying and correcting common errors in their writing.
As I believe it’s vital for teachers to listen to students and to be flexible with lessons, I plan to apply those principles to our course. So if you have questions or comments, feel free to speak up. As teachers, we are all learners too, and I’m sure we have a lot to learn from each other.
Thanks again for attending, and let’s get writing!
– Josh
