Taboo of Tattoo Lesson (with Predictable Partner structure)

This colorful ELL lesson explores the often taboo topic of tattoos in South Korea. Students are exposed to various different perspectives on the topic and get to contemplate how they feel about the art of tattooing as well as find out how their classmates feel about it. The lesson features a video narrated by Grace Neutral, a British television presenter and tattoo artist.

Language Level: Intermediate/Advanced
Time: 50 minutes

I. INTRO (2-3 min.)

  1. Use PPT to introduce the topic of tattoos. Show picture of Captain Jack Sparrow and elicit the actor’s name (Johnny Depp). Then show his quote and ask students to guess what word fills the gap. Elicit “tattoos”.
  2. Quickly go through the rest of the PPT, which features funny tattoos, to grab students’ attention and get them interested in the topic.

II. PRE-WATCHING (10-15 min.)

  1. Hand out BEYOND BEAUTY with Grace Neutral Vocab and Questions. Have students complete the vocabulary and then review.
  2. Have students complete the Pre-Watching questions and survey the class to get a variety of answers.

III. VIDEO and REACTION (15 min.)

  1. Watch “How Jay Park is changing attitudes to Korean beauty” from the BEYOND BEAUTY series with Grace Neutral. Stop once or twice at the most to check comprehension.
  2. Ask students to complete the Post-Watching questions and then survey the class to get some answers.
    1. Many students will say they are surprised that the family brought their daughter to get a tattoo and that the father got a tattoo as well.
    2. Use this as a transition to having students think about their classmates’ and their own opinions about tattoos.

IV. PREDICTABLE PARTNER ACTIVITY (15-20 min.)

  1. Pair up students (randomly, not with neighbors).
  2. Hand out Predictable Partner page, and have students complete.
  3. Hand out My Own Answers page, and have students complete.
  4. Have students find partner and have a chat to reveal and compare answers. Survey the class to elicit interesting results (correct guesses, discrepancies, surprising answers, etc.)
